India Today:

Junglemantra's charm lies in its simplicity and location. Set amidst 25 acres of woodland with old banyan and mahua trees, and a lake, it blends in beautifully with its surroundings. Everything about this safari camp is subtle--the cottages, the wicker and iron furniture, the unobtrusive attendants, and even the meals. There is a bakery that produces yummy breads and croissants. Spend your mornings tracking tigers, afternoons sleeping, and evenings nursing long drinks on the verandah.

Alastair Sawdays:

Without the owners - a young couple, passionate about the environment and wildlife - the place would be special. With them, it's a privilege to stay. Between the core forest and the buffer areas of the Bandhavgarh National Park, among acres of grasses and trees - mahua, banyan, peepal, ebony - is a magical setting, close to the elements and the animals. A large open-air shala, dining room and a library create a happy hub around which cluster your romantic bamboo cottages. Some display marble floors, others red sandstone, all have space for big beds, easy chairs and Indian furniture from all over, heaps of towels for rain showers and organic ayurvedic toiletries: style in the jungle! The breads, biscuits and croissants are famously good and Rhea's dinners are full Indian banquets, served by smiling tribal staff (not fluent in English). The game drives are sublime. Track leopards and tigers on elephant back, return to great terraces and verandas, a big fire and sofas, exploration guides and ice-cold mocktails. Trekkers and sybarites, honeymooners and young families - all will feel at home here, such is the welcome.

Time Out:

To reach Jungle Mantra, follow signs to King's Lodge, which is adjacent to this resort. Smack in the middle of the park's buffer zone, with a pond within its boundaries, Jungle Mantra gets more than its fair share of big cat sightings and wandering deer. The three-year old property has simple air-cooled cottages furnished in cane, bamboo and wrought-iron furniture, and roomy bathrooms. Shailin Ramji, who gave up a job in finance in the UK to set up the lodge with his wife Rhea, is keen on employing local help, including in the kitchen. The restaurant serves up delicious Western fare; don't miss the stuffed chicken and fruit pie if they're available. Ramji is also an avid photographer and birder and great company on a safari.
